Sell Art and Photography Books in Albuquerque

Art and photography books are a strong category in the used book market — but extremely condition-dependent, and full of surprises. Ansel Adams, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and many others have books that routinely bring three and four figures.

Photography Books That Hold Significant Value

  • Robert FrankThe Americans (Grove Press 1959 first US edition, or earlier Delpire 1958).
  • Ansel Adams — portfolios, signed books, This Is the American Earth, large-format monographs.
  • Diane Arbus — Aperture monograph first printings.
  • Richard AvedonIn the American West, Observations, Nothing Personal.
  • Walker EvansAmerican Photographs, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men.
  • Helmut Newton — SUMO, large-format monographs.
  • Edward WestonMy Camera on Point Lobos, California and the West.
  • Sally MannImmediate Family first editions.
  • Edward S. Curtis — any original portfolio or plate.
  • Signed by the photographer — often doubles or triples value.

Art Monographs That Move Well

  • Georgia O'Keeffe — Some Memories of Drawings, catalogue raisonné, Steiglitz-era material.
  • Taos Society of Artists monographs.
  • Fritz Scholder, R.C. Gorman, Bert Geer Phillips.
  • Pueblo pottery monographs — especially Maria Martinez, Lucy Lewis, Nampeyo.
  • Navajo textile reference — Wheat, Kaufman & Selser.
  • Signed artist monographs and exhibition catalogs.
  • Taschen large-format editions.
  • Skira monographs on modernist masters.

Exhibition Catalogs

Exhibition catalogs are routinely undervalued at estate sales because they look ephemeral — but some are very valuable. MoMA, Whitney, Guggenheim, and major retrospective catalogs (particularly from the 1960s–1990s) can bring $50–$500 depending on artist and edition. Don't throw them out.

What Art Books Aren't Usually Valuable

  • Generic “1000 Most Famous Paintings” type coffee-table compilations.
  • Heavily used or worn oversized books (spines broken, jackets missing).
  • Book club editions of major art titles.
  • Time-Life art series (beautiful books, but oversupply kills value).
  • Most textbook-style art survey books.

Condition Factors That Affect Art Book Value

Art books are big, heavy, and hard to move without damage. For serious value, we want:

  • Dust jackets present and in good condition — a missing jacket on a $300 art book can cut value in half.
  • Tight binding — oversize art books often crack at the spine.
  • Clean pages — no foxing, water damage, or staining.
  • Slipcases present for books originally issued in slipcases (Taschen XL, Helmut Newton SUMO, etc.).
